Ophthalmology Services in New Jersey
Retina and Subspecialty
Retina-Vitreous Consultants (RVC) is a premier ophthalmology subspecialty practice in New Jersey. Founded almost 30 years ago, RVC continues to provide expert consultation and personalized care in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal, vitreous, and macular diseases. Doctors in Northern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New York State refer their patients to RVC for expert evaluation and treatment.
RVC physicians have been selected as The Best Doctors in New York Magazine and Top Doctors in New Jersey Monthly Magazine. They have also been featured as Top Doctors in Castle Connolly Reports and selected as Best Doctors in America and Top Ophthalmologists in America.
Retina-Vitreous Consultants’ scope of practice is limited to consultation, laser surgical intervention, and intraocular surgical rehabilitation of vision loss secondary to diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula. These conditions include diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, ocular inflammation (uveitis), macular surface anomalies, such as macular holes and puckers, retinal vascular diseases, and hereditary and juvenile retinal degenerative conditions and dystrophies.
Our Retinal Imaging Center offers digital real time fluorescein and ICG angiography, ocular ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for immediate review by Dr. Kanter to determine a patient’s course of treatment. OCT is an invaluable tool in the diagnosis of retinal disease and allows for two-dimensional quantitative and volumetric analysis of a patient’s clinical response to laser, surgical, and pharmaco-therapeutic treatments.
Retina-Vitreous Consultants is an active participant in national collaborative clinical research trials investigating the effects of various drug therapies, laser modalities, and surgical interventions in the treatment of patients with diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
We have been recognized by our peers for our expertise in being the only retinal practice in Northern New Jersey to be certified by the world renowned Harvard affiliated Joslin Center for Diabetes in Boston.

Dr. Tian (Tina) Xia is excited to return to New Jersey to join Eric D. Kanter, M.D. as the newest member of Retina Vitreous Consultants. She is a summa cum laude and Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the competitive 7-year combined BA/MD program at Rutgers University. She completed her Ophthalmology residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School during which time she published more than 10 peer-reviewed publications and presented at numerous regional, national and international ophthalmic meetings.
Dr. Xia recently concluded her two-year Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery fellowship at the prestigious Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. At Scheie, she developed an expertise in the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and ocular inflammatory conditions, as well as, in all aspects of vitreoretinal surgery. She has a particular interest in sutureless scleral fixated intraocular lenses, repair of retinal detachments, macular pucker removal and macular hole repair. Her academic interests include the investigation of novel pharmacologic agents for the treatment of both dry and wet forms of macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Xia is particularly excited about introducing the Port Delivery System (PDS) to New Jersey, as soon as it is formally FDA approved. The PDS is a surgically implanted drug reservoir that continuously releases Lucentis, thus enabling patients with macular degeneration to maintain significant visual gains without the treatment burden of frequent intraocular injections. As an expert in sub-retinal drug delivery and one of the few graduating fellows in the country with experience in intraocular gene therapy, Dr. Xia has already become a tremendous asset to the Ophthalmology community in New Jersey.
Dr. Xia is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She will be accepting new patient consultations for both medical and surgical retinal disorders at both the Livingston and Morristown offices. Please welcome Dr. Tina Xia as a member of Retina Vitreous Consultants.
